Women delivering at the Birth Center stay about 6-12 hours after delivery. Patient education and follow-up services include the following:
• Discharge teaching before you leave the center, including what to expect during your recovery period, normal postpartum changes and danger signs to look for in yourself and your baby.
•  A telephone visit from one of our Postpartum Nurses within 24 hours of your birth to make sure that all is well with your and your baby.
• A home visit from our Postpartum Nurse within 48 hours of your birth. At this visit, the Nurse will weigh the baby and make sure that breastfeeding is going well and that your needs are being met. We also perform the Newborn Metabolic screen to test for rare metabolic disorders at this visit.
• A 7-10 day follow-up visit for mom and baby at the Birth Center This is a good opportunity to review the birth with your midwife.
• A 6 week postpartum visit including family planning if desired.

Women delivering with us at St. Mary’s Medical Center typically stay in the hospital for 2-3 days postpartum. These women return to the Birth Center for the 6 week follow-up visit (the 7-10 day visit is optional as well).

All of our moms benefit from 24 hour access to the on-call Midwife and breastfeeding support.
