Natural Birth in Our Center The experience of natural childbirth is very empowering for mothers, as well as healthy for both mother and child. Wondering if you can do it? Your midwife is your supporter and is committed to helping you achieve the natural birth you desire and deserve! Here at the Lisa Ross Birth & Women's Center, we have three birthing rooms. Each room is a cozy bedroom, reminiscent of home, with a full-sized bed, recliner chair, bathroom and shower. As well, each room has its own private patio with a small garden and outdoor seating. We welcome your family and friends at your birth, as you wish. They can use the Center's family room too, if they wish to be close but not in the birth room. Our family room has comfortable, overstuffed couch and chair, a TV/VCR; the family can also use our bathroom and our kitchen with a refrigerator, microwave, and eat-in table. All the necessities are here for a long wait, day or night! We do not limit the number of people you may have in the birthing room with you, and of course, children are welcome, as you wish. We have long halls, making a circle within the Center, where you may walk during early labor to help speed the pace of your labor. The private shower is a wonderful for pain relief and relaxation during active labor. We do provide some IV pain relief medications if needed during the intense part of your labor. Your birth is your choice. At our Center, you are free to get into any position which is comfortable to you. We have many birthing supports to help you, such as the birthing ball, used for either upper or lower body support and to assist you in aligning the baby in the pelvis. We also have two birthing stools to assist you in a squatting position if you prefer that. Our Center encourages active support and participation from the birth partner of your choice: your significant other; your mom; your friend; your doula--anyone you choose! Birth is a time for bonding, closeness, intimacy, and one of the midwife's roles is to foster the closeness and communication between you and your birth partner. The Center provides high-touch, appropriate technology care during your birth. We don't routinely use IVs during labor and delivery, unless medically necessary. As well, continuous monitoring during labor is not medically necessary in a low-risk birth. Remember, birth is not inherently risky! Not to be hooked up to wires and monitors leaves you free to move about as you wish. In addition, eating and drinking is encouraged during labor, rather than restricted. The intimate bond between mother and newborn is very important following birth. Here at our Center, we don't take your baby away from you. In fact, we don't even have a "nursery". All of your baby's care is done right in the birthing room. When your baby is born, she is immediately placed right on your chest and there she will stay! Breastfeeding is strongly encouraged and usually begins within 20 minutes after birth. We are proud of our 94% breastfeeding rate when the mother and baby leave the Center for home. All of our medical staff is trained in neonatal resuscitation and emergency procedures so that you can be assured of accurate and prompt treatment in the unlikely event of maternal or neonatal emergency.
