Many women will experience an abnormal pap smear at sometime in their lives. Abnormal pap smears are usually caused by the Human Papilloma Virus (or HPV). HPV is a sexually transmitted virus that has many different strains. Persistent infections with the "high risk" strains of this virus are associated with cervical cancer. For more information about HPV, click here.

If you have an abnormal pap, you may need to schedule a Colposcopy. This is a simple procedure that is done in our office.

During the Colposcopy, the provider will use a colposcope to look for abnormal cells on the vulva, vagina, and cervix. If abnormal cells are evident, a biopsy may be performed.
