My Birth Story...

After finding out in July, 2001, that I was
pregnant, I became very anxious. I told my primary care
physician that I wanted to see an obstetrician right away. The
Lisa Ross Birth & Women's Center was the only facility that
could see me within a week.
I was told that they specialized in natural
childbirth, which was something I hadn't considered at the
time.
Arthur and I weren't sure what we were
about to face, being that we would be under the care of
nurse-midwives instead of doctors and nurses as in our previous
births. The first visit went well. We had only positive things
to say. The center focused on my family as a whole, which made
every visit very relaxing.
We liked the idea of the warm setting,
being able to deliver in water, and having as many family and
friends as we wanted with us to share the joy of the delivery
of our new baby. However, I was concerned about not being able
to have the epidural, which I was accustomed to.
It took half of my pregnancy to fully
decide I didn't want to go to the hospital to be confined to
the bed, hooked up to IVs, and not be allowed to eat or drink.
Most of all, I knew I would have little sympathy from the
hospital staff.
Arthur and I took it upon ourselves to take
the refresher birth class as we felt this would be necessary in
the natural delivery. March 2, 2002, came and it was time
to experience something I had never experienced before.
With the advice of the refresher class, the
help of my family (Arthur most of all), the birthing tub, and
the comfort of nurse-midwife Susan Sims, I was able to deliver
my 7-pound, 9-ounce baby girl without any pain medications or
tearing. My twelve-hour post delivery time went by smoothly as
well, with the comforting of the nurses, Lindsay and Bobbye. In
no time I was ready to go home.
I would like to add that this was a
wonderful experience. Were I ever to do this again, I would
most definitely go back to the Lisa Ross Birth & Women's
Center. I wouldn't trade this experience for the world.
