Center for Medical Consumers www.medicalconsumers.org Founded in 1976 the Center for Medical Consumers is a non-profit advocacy organization active in both statewide and national efforts to improve the quality of health care.

Women's Resources and Links, www.feminist.com, An excellent site put together by women whose goals are to promote awareness, education, activism, and empowerment. Has a nationwide database of tens of thousands of women's resources that allow you to locate a women's services, including adoption agencies, battered women's shelters and AIDS organizations near you. The health section is very inclusive and has links to many sites on general women's health, reproductive health, cancer and AIDS.

 

Feminist Women's Health Center, www.fwhc.org  "We have a vision of the world where all women freely make their own decisions regarding their bodies, reproduction, and sexuality--a world where women can fulfill their unique potential and live healthy whole lives."

 

National Black Women's Health Imperative, held its first meeting on the campus of Spellman College in 1983, taking up the rallying cry of civil rights activist Fannie Lou Horner, who said she was "sick and tired of being sick and tired."  Run by black women for black women, it is committed to improving the health status and lives of the 17.8 million black women in the US.

National Maternal and Child Health Clearinghouse,  funded by HHS and HRSA, this site lists maternal and child health resources by state, and is a clearinghouse on Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS)

National Women's Health Resource Center, www.healthywomen.org This organization does not accept money from pharmaceutical companies and is a good comprehensive source of unbiased information on women's health issues.

Office of Minority Health within HHS, www.omhrc.gov  Maintained by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, this site holds a database of materials on specific health concerns of African Americans, Asians, Hispanics/Latinos, Native Americans, and Native Hawaiians/Pacific Islanders. There is also an espanol language site.

Our Bodies, Ourselves: Boston  Women's Health Collective website, www.ourbodiesourselves.org, a wealth of information about women's health issues, including an on-line library of women's health articles and very good links.  This  site is of great assistance in helping women think  critically about health information.

Planned Parenthood, www.plannedparenthood.com, good info about contraception and conception!  See site links to "ways to chart your fertility pattern."

Women's Studies/Women's Issues Resource Sites:  highly acclaimed, selected and annotated listing of web sites containing resources and information about women's studies / women's issues, with an emphasis on sites of particular use to an academic women's studies program.

National Library of Medicine Gateway

Librarians Index to the Internet (LII.org)   Created and maintained by librarians who are experts in finding and evaluating online resources, the Librarians' Index to the Internet is itself one of the most valuable resources on the Web. Its focus extends to just about every topic, but its coverage of women is especially impressive. Its opening page on Women" lists approximately 70 topics. Each of these contains carefully selected and annotated links to information-rich web sites. Though the topics range widely--the S's alone include Sex Discrimination, Social Conditions, Speeches, Sports & Athletics, Statistics, and Suffrage--the site offers particularly extensive coverage of health issues and what it refers to as "Notable Women." National Alliance of Breast Cancer Organizations (NABCO), www.nabco.org, is the leading non-profit information and education resource on breast cancer, networking over 400 member organizations nationwide in the US.  NABCO provides info to medical professionals, and to patients and their families and to advocates.
