Care of Menopause and Peri-menopause at the Center

by Linda Cole, CNM, Executive Director

The nurse-midwives at the Lisa Ross Birth & Women’s Center have helped many women through the childbearing years.  But did you know that we can also help you to stay healthy far beyond these years?

A larger number of women are now seeking care during the “perimenopausal” years with a certified nurse-midwife.

So what is menopause? What is perimenopause?  Menopause is the passing of a woman’s last menstrual cycle, usually only diagnosed after being period-free for one year. The average age of menopause is 51. Perimenopause is the period leading up to and including menopause, when a woman’s levels of estrogen and progesterone are declining.

Menopause is not an illness, but an expected normal change in a woman’s reproductive cycle.  Because some women experience “symptoms” during the perimenopausal period, many women seek “treatment,” usually consisting of hormone replacement therapy, or HRT. These symptoms range in severity and may include hot flashes, irregular menstrual cycles, night sweats, vaginal dryness and sleeplessness.

There may be other benefits of HRT as well. Estrogens have a protective effect on bone density and can help prevent osteoporosis.  HRT may also protect against heart disease, high cholesterol levels, and Alzheimer’s disease, although these benefits are not proven.

Like any other medication which is prescribed, it is important for women considering HRT to weigh all the benefits and risks. The risks of taking HRT may include an increased risk of breast cancer, though studies are not conclusive. Other risks, though rare, include blood clots and gallbladder disease.

Menopause is a good time to assess one’s lifestyle and make changes in a positive direction. For women of this age, good health behaviors may be more important than HRT for overall well being.

If a woman smokes, she should stop. Exercising 4-5 times a week to maintain cardiovascular and overall fitness, eating wisely with calcium-rich foods included, and moderating alcohol intake are all very important, though not always easy. Other health maintenance activities around this time are mammography to detect breast cancer, obtaining bone density studies if one is at risk for osteoporosis, and getting regular screening for cervical and colon cancer.

Some women who do not wish to take standard HRT still desire symptom relief through complementary or natural therapies. These might include herbal supplements, natural yam creams that contain micronized progesterone, accupressure or accupuncture.

The certified nurse-midwives at the Lisa Ross Birth & Women’s Center can help guide you or someone you know through the many decisions about this normal life event. If you have any questions, please call 524-4422 to schedule an appointment.

Prenatal Classes Help Prepare for Labor, Delivery, New Baby

Getting ready for a new baby is like preparing for a marathon run. Your body and mind are focused on one momentous event for months.

What can you do to get ready? The Lisa Ross Birth & Women’s Center offers a number of classes for the expectant mother and her family. In addition to preparing you for labor, classes help you successfully handle breastfeeding, caring for your newborn, and dealing with sibling rivalry.

Call the office to reserve your spot in the following classes:

Breastfeeding class ($15) – Breast is best, but it’s not always easy at first. Learn how to get the baby to latch on properly, how to establish a good milk supply, how to care for sore nipples and other challenges you may face in the first weeks of breastfeeding. Success at breastfeeding often depends on a mother’s knowledge about it beforehand. Taught monthly at the center by Maggie Dawson.

First-time moms and those who have had a previous birth with an epidural must take a natural childbirth education class. The center offers two:

Childbirth Education Class ($50) –This is a 6-week Lamaze series. You’ll learn relaxation techniques for pain management and learn what’s going to happen to your body. New classes begin every two months and are taught by Cindy Stair, Certified Doula.  Plan to have your partner or labor coach attend as well.

Bradley Method ($200, includes course workbook)– This is an intensive 12-week childbirth preparation course in the Bradley Method of Natural Childbirth, taught by Marcia Bailey. The Bradley Method emphasizes prenatal nutrition, labor preparation exercises and relaxation techniques to manage labor pain.

Childbirth Preparation Refresher Class ($25) – A 3-hour refresher course for moms who have previously had childbirth education classes and a natural birth, taught by Cindy Stair, Certified Doula.

Wholebirth Prenatal Yoga ($95) – A 6-week series of yoga and sharing to prepare for birth, taught by Lindsay Rogers, a center nurse, doula and certified yoga instructor. Come relax, rejuvenate and share in the experience of pregnancy. No experience necessary. Classes are weekly at Well By Nature and Court South.

The class is for women in all stages of pregnancy, and can be joined at any time.  The only requirements for the class are to bring an open heart, comfortable clothing, a cushion and a blanket. This class encompasses meditation, yoga, childbirth preparation, story telling and support.

Sibling Class (No Charge) - Schedule a time for your older child to meet one-on-one with nurse-midwife Susan Sims, who offers them helpful tips on becoming a big brother or sister.
