Colposcopy & Cryotherapy

at the Center

Most women will remain healthy throughout their lives and will never experience an abnormal Pap smear. But for those of you who do receive that phone call saying your Pap smear was abnormal, we have some good news for you.
One of our midwife, Laura Muir, recently traveled to California to become certified in a specialize procedure called colposcopy. This is a procedure in which the cervix is viewed under a special microscope. It is done after an abnormal Pap smear to see if any further treatment is necessary.

In addition, Laura has been trained in cryotherapy, which is a procedure to remove abnormal cervical lesions. It literally means "cold treatment", and involves freezing a small amount of tissue on the cervix so that it dies and sloughs off.   Follow-up exams and Pap smears are essential to make sure that the cryotherapy was successful in removing all the abnormal cells.

Together, these tests help to lower the risk of cervical cancer associated with abnormal Pap smears. We’re very pleased to offer these procedures in the familiar surroundings of the Lisa Ross Birth & Women’s Center, rather than having to refer patients to another provider. It’s just another way we hope to offer high quality, personalized health care to meet the needs of our patients.
